Semi-Recessed Medicine Cabinets

Balance usable storage with limited wall depth. Configure how much of the cabinet sits inside the wall—and how much remains visible—for your project.

Category definition

Part Inside the Wall. Part Intentionally Visible.

A semi-recessed—or partially recessed—medicine cabinet is considered when the wall cavity cannot accept the full body depth, but the project wants less projection than a surface-mounted cabinet.

01Confirm the wall first.
Studs, plumbing, wiring, tile build-up and available cavity depth affect the solution.
02Define the visible side.
The projected cabinet portion needs an intentional finish, side panel and trim condition.
03Approve one wall section.
The drawing should connect overall depth, recess, projection and rough opening.

Choose the Mounting Route From the Wall Condition

These diagrams explain the relationship only. Final dimensions, fixing and electrical access require an approved project drawing.

Side-by-side cutaway comparison of recessed, semi-recessed and surface-mounted mirrored medicine cabinet installation

Recessed

Most of the body sits within the wall cavity for the lowest projection.

Requires sufficient cavity depth

Semi-Recessed

Part of the body enters the wall while a finished portion remains visible.

Balances cavity depth and storage

Surface-Mount

The cabinet mounts to the finished wall with the body outside the cavity.

When Semi-Recessed Is Worth Reviewing

It is a project response to an actual wall constraint—not a universal default installation.

01

Shallow Wall Cavity

The available cavity cannot contain the selected storage depth without changing the wall construction.

02

Renovation Constraints

Existing studs, services or finishes limit how far the cabinet can be recessed.

03

Projection Control

The project needs more storage than a shallow recessed body but less bulk than full surface mounting.

Wall-fit decision

Turn Site Conditions Into a Mounting Decision

Do not select the installation from the product image alone. Measure the actual wall, identify hidden services and compare usable storage with acceptable projection.

Is the full cabinet depth available?Check the clear cavity after tile, backer, insulation, pipes and wiring—not only the nominal stud size.
If yes: review recessed
2
Can part of the body enter the wall?Confirm framing clearance, fixing points and the minimum practical recess for the chosen construction.
If yes: review semi-recessed
3
How much projection is acceptable?Coordinate faucet reach, backsplash, lighting, adjacent walls and door opening around the visible body.

4
Can the wall remain unopened?Where cutting is unsuitable, compare a complete surface-mount route with finished side panels.

Coordinate What Remains Outside the Wall

The projected portion becomes part of the bathroom elevation. Its finish and junctions must be designed, not treated as leftover cabinet depth.

01 · SIDE TREATMENT

Finished Side Panels

Choose a visible side direction that works with the mirror face and surrounding finishes.

  • Mirror side kit direction
  • Anodized or coated metal
  • Project finish reference
  • Corner and joint expectations
02 · WALL INTERFACE

Flange, Trim & Tile

Define how the cabinet covers the opening and meets the finished wall.

  • Flange or trim width
  • Tile termination condition
  • Sealant and shadow gaps
  • Opening tolerance coverage
03 · DOOR MOVEMENT

Hinges & Clearances

Protect usable opening and avoid clashes with lights, side walls and nearby fittings.

  • Left, right or multi-door layout
  • Opening-angle direction
  • Finger pull and mirror overlap
  • Soft-close option review
04 · INTERIOR USE

Shelves & Accessories

Convert total body depth into usable storage around hardware and electrical components.

  • Adjustable shelf positions
  • Clear internal depth
  • Outlet and cable location

Project applications

One Installation Principle, Different Project Priorities

Each application starts with the same wall-fit logic, then changes door layout, functions, finish and delivery coordination.

Checks That Protect the Approved Wall Fit

Acceptance points should follow the drawing and approved sample. The items below are review categories, not unsupported universal test claims.

Body & Opening Fit

Review external dimensions, squareness, mounting holes, flange coverage and the relationship between recess and projection.

DRAWING-BASED INSPECTION

Door & Interior Alignment

Check mirror-door gap, hinge movement, catches, shelf supports, internal clearance and selected accessories.

SAMPLE-BASED INSPECTION

Lighting & Electrical

Where selected, review light continuity, controls, wiring, driver access and agreed destination-market documentation.

Semi-recessed cabinet FAQs

Questions to Resolve Before Quotation

What is a semi-recessed medicine cabinet?

It places part of the cabinet body inside the wall cavity while the remaining depth projects into the room. “Partially recessed medicine cabinet” is a common equivalent term.

Is semi-recessed the same as surface-mounted?

No. A surface-mounted cabinet keeps the body outside the wall. A semi-recessed cabinet requires an opening because part of its body enters the wall.

How much of the cabinet can be recessed?

That depends on the cabinet construction, available cavity, framing, services, finish build-up and installation details. It must be defined on the approved wall section.

What information is needed for a quotation?

Send overall width and height, total depth, available cavity depth, rough opening, acceptable projection, door layout, functions, quantity, destination and a wall section if available.

Can lighting or an outlet be added?

Electrical options can be reviewed against component space, wiring entry, service access, voltage and destination-market requirements. Availability is confirmed for the selected specification.

What are the MOQ and lead time?

They depend on dimensions, construction, finishes, functions, packaging and quantity, and are confirmed after the actual project specification is reviewed.
